Protective Security Officer (PSO)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following and other duties may be assigned:
- PSO shall perform a variety of security-related duties depending on the type of post.
- PSOs shall be thoroughly familiar with the Post Orders assigned to his or her specific post. Under no circumstances shall any PSO neglect his or her assigned duties in order to use that time to become familiar with individual Post Orders.
- Outgoing PSOs shall provide a brief to in-coming PSOs and maintain a pass-on log of occurring continuing, or anticipated events and actions associated with a particular post.
- PSOs shall be familiar with each office’s name and the locations within the facility of the most commonly sought-after offices or locations, such as service offices, restrooms, elevators, entrances and exits, and parking areas. PSOs shall provide such information to any visitor upon request.
- PSOs assigned to access posts shall be knowledgeable of the location as well as the use of the nearest first aid kit, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) kit (if any), fire extinguisher, fire alarm, emergency exit, and duress alarm (if any). PSOs assigned to these types of posts shall be ready, willing, and able to use the aforementioned items as necessary and as required by the Post Orders.
- PSOs shall be mentally alert and physically ready to operate and enforce the Government’s system of personnel identification and access control.
- PSOs shall be responsible for operating all security equipment and programs on post, such as x-ray machines, walk-through metal detectors, hand-held metal detectors, active barriers, and video surveillance systems, as applicable. No PSO is permitted to work on any post containing security equipment without prior training on that specific equipment.
- PSOs are required to conduct and report on performance tests in order to ensure security equipment is functioning properly. PSOs will conduct performance tests on security equipment (i.e. walk-through and hand-held metal detectors, x-ray machines, undercarriage inspection systems, active traffic barriers, and other automated security devices) and report any issues with the equipment to his or her supervisor. The Contractor shall relay any issues to the control center and COR.
- PSOs shall participate in agency-sponsored exercises, if required. Examples include shelter-on-place exercises, evacuations and fire drills.
- PSOs shall perform functions in the SSA Physical Access Management (PAM) system in support of access control operations.
- PSOs shall be responsible to do duties with access controls, screening and roving patrol and response.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
At least two years of verifiable experience as an armed security officer within the past five (5) years or two years of U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard or Reserve service or successful completion of Federal or State Certified Law Enforcement Education and Training or Police Officer’s Standard Training course.
Language Skills: Must have the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English. Must possess the ability to understand, explain, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, directives, and procedures.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have a valid driver's license or state ID; possess an approved Social Security Card issued by SSA; Ability to obtain a Maryland State Clearance; Ability to obtain Maryland State Hand gun Permit
Other Qualifications:
Must be a United States citizen, including of U.S. territories and/or commonwealths. The COR may approve lawful permanent residents who are currently members of U.S. Armed Services (Reserves or National Guard) or who possess an Honorable Discharge from a U.S. military component.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
